According to EU Air Passenger Rights Regulations, the passengers are entitled to compensation if flights booking are changed by the airlines. The passengers have the rights to receive the compensation from the airline under certain conditions.

If your flight booking is changed, then:
- Ask the airline to provide you the confirmation of a change in flight booking with the reasons.
- Collect proof of photos, receipts documenting any expense incurred, tickets, vouchers.
- Exchange contact details with other passengers.
- Insist on receiving food and refreshments at the airport.
- Calculate your entitlement to compensation.
Am I Entitled To Compensation?
Yes, you are entitled to compensation but if your flight bookings are changed by the airline. You can also get the compensation if you found out about it before embarking on your trip. Or you can get the flight schedule change compensation if your booking is changed by airlines.
- How Much Compensation Will You Get:
If the airline is responsible for changing in booking tickets, then passengers are entitled to compensation. The amount of compensation is based on the total distance covered by the flight. But, the flight cost does not matter.
- Denied Boarding
If your flight is late more than 3 hours than your original flight, then this comes under the denied boarding. This also happens if your original flight was overbooked or was canceled without replacement.
Note: The passengers can get the denied boarding compensation if they are denied the opportunity but checked in on time, travel documents are completed and no security or health risks for the flight or other passengers.
Exception: Extraordinary Circumstances
There is no doubt that airlines are responsible for flight booking changes. But there are other such circumstances in which airlines are not responsible for. And that are extraordinary circumstances. In such situation arise airlines are not obliged to pay compensation to passengers.
Extraordinary circumstances include the following scenarios:
- The closure of the airport or airspace.
- Political unrest, terrorism, security risks that cannot be avoided.
- Bad weather such as fog, hail, storms and heavy snow.
- Bird strike.
In such cases, the airlines exempt from compensating the passengers but it is also the airline’s responsibility to prevent flight cancellations and delays.
Services Provided During Extraordinary Circumstances:
The airline offers the number of services to their passengers if such following situations occur:
- If the booking is changed voluntarily and waiting at the airport for more than 2 hours, then you are entitled to food and refreshments. But, the reason does not matter what caused the cancellation.
- If passengers wait at the airport for 2 hours or more, then the airline offers you drinks and snacks. The airline also offers the bigger meal if passengers are facing the longer waiting period. Passengers are also entitled to 2 free telephone calls, faxes or e-mails.
- If you are already at the airport and airline rebooked you on next flight and the next day, then the airline provides the hotel accommodation and pays for your transfers to and from the airport. So speak to the airline first before you go ahead.
- If you are on an alternative flight that arrives you at your destination more than 5 hours later than the flight you had originally booked, then you can opt not to fly at all and to receive a refund for the price of your ticket.
So, the flight compensation regulation is a regulation in EU law establishing common rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellations, or long delays of flights.
