Note: The passengers can get the denied boarding compensation if they are denied the opportunity but checked in on time, travel documents are completed and no security or health risks for the flight or other passengers.

Exception: Extraordinary Circumstances

There is no doubt that airlines are responsible for flight booking changes. But there are other such circumstances in which airlines are not responsible for. And that are extraordinary circumstances. In such situation arise airlines are not obliged to pay compensation to passengers.

Extraordinary circumstances include the following scenarios:

  • Bad weather such as fog, hail, storms and heavy snow.
  • Bird strike.

In such cases, the airlines exempt from compensating the passengers but it is also the airline’s responsibility to prevent flight cancellations and delays.

Services Provided During Extraordinary Circumstances:

The airline offers the number of services to their passengers if such following situations occur:

  • If the booking is changed voluntarily and waiting at the airport for more than 2 hours, then you are entitled to food and refreshments. But, the reason does not matter what caused the cancellation.
  • If passengers wait at the airport for 2 hours or more, then the airline offers you drinks and snacks. The airline also offers the bigger meal if passengers are facing the longer waiting period. Passengers are also entitled to 2 free telephone calls, faxes or e-mails.
  • If you are already at the airport and airline rebooked you on next flight and the next day, then the airline provides the hotel accommodation and pays for your transfers to and from the airport. So speak to the airline first before you go ahead.
  • If you are on an alternative flight that arrives you at your destination more than 5 hours later than the flight you had originally booked, then you can opt not to fly at all and to receive a refund for the price of your ticket.
